How to raise a Mensch - Ask Slovie

Ask Us Query:
Hello Slovie, After reading your mother's book I feel you are all part of my family. I live in Los Angeles Iam divorce with 2 children. My ex husband Always paid for jewish education for the kids.My son is going into 8th grade and my daughter is going to 7th grade. He got married to someone not so interested in jewish education, they got to boys together, one is three years old and the other is a new born. In addition, she has a child that attend public school. Every year he gives me a hard time regarding the school. This year he register the two kids and his three years old boy but he doesn't want to pay for our two children only his three years old. I cannot effort the payment and the school cannot give scholarships. What can I do?
Reply:
You are obviously handling alot and it is of course not easy for you but there is nothing as important for your children's Jewish identity as their Jewish education. And though they can gain much from home there is of course the education that schools provide along with peer pressure, holiday celebrations, and kosher food that become difficulties when children do not go to a Jewish school. Either speak to your lawyer (what happened when you had your settlement, wasn't the children's education spoken about?). or speak to your local Rabbi and ask him to help you as a liason with the school. Explain how vital your children's Judaism is, perhaps you can volunteer in the school or give whatever you can. I realize that tuitions are enormous but we must not give up on the future of our children and I am sure that with the right Rabbi at your side, seeing how crucial this is to you, you can work something out with the school so that they do not close their doors on you. best, slovie
